The American Hospital Association is urging the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to implement a nationwide master patient index. The idea for this index was sparked by an Institute of Medicine 2011 report outlining that a comprehensive IT health structure would lead to higher quality patient care.
Most of the healthcare industry is in favor of this type of database, including hospitals and healthcare executives. Creating a comprehensive database will involve an extensive exploration of public policies, as well as a closer look at several existing acts and laws.
