Information Commissioner Offers Advice – and a Warning – on the Use of Encryption

Despite a warning by the Information Commissioner’s Office that failure to encrypt data may result in financial penalties should that data be lost or stolen, many companies still are not protecting their data. Several security professionals state that not only must encryption be utilized by large companies, but their management must encourage data protection as well. Although these professionals acknowledge that introducing data encryption may lead to some minor difficulties in the short term, these pale in comparison to recent fines and penalties given to companies that did not properly encrypt their data.
